DAY 3: Oct. 11, WED: CHICHEN ITZA – CENOTE YOKDZONOT – IZAMAL – MERIDA- Breakfast & Lunch
We start early today for a private sunrise tour of Chichén Itzá before it opens to the public. In 1988, this ancient Mayan city was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and in 2007 declared one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Let yourself be fascinated by the imposing, architecturally impressive buildings of the Maya and admire, among other things, the famous pyramid of Kukulcán, which is an enormous calendar made of stone as well as the huge ball court. Chichén Itzá has another astronomical structure – El Caracol, also known as the Observatory. Built sometime in the 7th century El Castillo, had an astronomical purpose! In fact, it is a solar calendar. The windows and doors in the El Caracol Observatory are specifically aligned with the movements of the Sun, stars, and planets, particularly Venus. Afterwards, continue to the Cenote Yokdzonot where you can take a refreshing dip in the bright blue water. Around the Cenote we will visit a small Yucatecan Mayan village which with the support of the government, maintains the cenote and looks after a small restaurant and thus ensures the income of the inhabitants. We will continue travel to Mérida, visiting enroute Izamal the small colonial town, known for its yellow painted colonial buildings and the beautiful old Franciscan monastery.
